Edward M. Lai specializes in representing building contractors and small business owners in commercial disputes, employment advice and litigation, contract negotiation, construction defect litigation and tort/personal injury litigation. Mr. Lai has experience in the fields of construction law, Americans With Disabilities (ADA) litigation, first party and third party insurance coverage, business entity formation, landlord rights, and perfecting/enforcing mechanic’s liens and stop notices.
Experience and Academic Background
Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Lai was an insurance claims litigation specialist for national insurance carriers The Maryland Casualty Company and CNA Insurance. As a claims representative, he gained expertise in analyzing first and third party insurance coverage under commercial general liability policies, homeowner policies, marine policies, and professional general liability (errors & omissions) policies. He also became skilled in negotiation from handling thousands of litigated and non-litigated claims. His knowledge of how insurance carriers evaluate and handle their claims makes Mr. Lai highly effective in achieving the best results for his clients, whether it is through settlement negotiations or through trial.
Mr. Lai has a B.S. in Psychology and a B.A. in Urban Studies from the University of Maryland at College Park and a J.D. from Golden Gate University’s School of Law in San Francisco.
Admitted to Practice
In addition to being licensed to practice in all Courts in the State of California, Mr. Lai is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Central, Eastern, Southern and Northern Districts of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Federal Claims.
Mr. Lai is an Associate Professor at the California State University East Bay Campus where he teaches law classes in the paralegal and prelaw programs. He also served as a Law Instructor for SCORE, sponsored by the Alameda and Contra Costa Counties Small Business Programs. Mr. Lai works as a Special Master for the Counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Solano. He is on the of Board of Directors for the Alameda County Meals on Wheels, former President of the Redwood Heights Neighborhood Association, and a Commissioner of the City of Oakland Housing, Relocation and Rent Board.
